Muhheakannuck Nations at Nu Schodack Medicine Pauwau
A Pauwau is the person with a primary responsibility for the health of the villagers on all levels. To maintain the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health of the entire village, up until the European influx, the Pauwau called the village together for approximately ten days several times a year. Now, the time is likely to be much shorter and less frequently. The days are spent in discussion, including story telling, on anything and everything that may affect the health of the village, and the evenings are spent feasting, drumming and dancing.
A Gathering in the Spirit of the Elders initiated by the Pauwau in the Algonquin Tradition is itself called a Pauwau.
Modern gatherings, also known as powwows, are modeled on this traditional village gathering, facilitated by the Pauwau, to promote individual and community healing. Medicine Pauwau ... a participatory gathering of like minded people focusing on indigenous traditional practices for living together in harmony, cooperation, and mutual sovereignty, respecting self, each other, and Mother Earth, sharing our gifts with our neighbors and in the bounty of Earth. There is ceremony, demonstrations, drumming and dancing, food, items for purchase, singing, story telling, etc. Admission is by free will donation, supporting the host organization. All are welcome. No one turned away.
